The University of Delaware baseball team marked Bob Hannah Day with an 8-3 victory against Florida International University on May 2 at Hannah Stadium. The event included a celebration of the late head coach Bob Hannah’s legacy and welcomed back more than 60 alumni.
The game was significant for the Blue Hens, as it improved their overall record to 16-31 and brought them to a three-game winning streak. They have now won five out of their last seven games and secured their first Conference USA series win.
LT Cockrill led the offense by going two-for-three with two runs batted in and a walk, while Matthew Minckler added two hits and scored once. Sal Mineo and Harry Carr also contributed multiple RBIs. On the mound, Chase Deibler started for Delaware, pitching three scoreless innings and earning his second win of the season. Doug Marose pitched four innings in relief, allowing three earned runs, while Ryan Pugh closed out the final two innings without giving up any runs to earn his second save.
The Blue Hens took an early lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly from Anthony DeCesare followed by Cockrill’s two-run double. Additional runs came in the third inning through Vincent Davis being hit by a pitch with bases loaded and another sacrifice fly from Carr. Mineo extended the lead further in the sixth before FIU responded with a home run in the seventh inning; however, Delaware secured its advantage with additional RBIs from Carr and Mineo.
Before play began, alumni gathered on field as Bruce Hannah, son of Bob Hannah, threw out the ceremonial first pitch to honor his father’s contributions to Delaware baseball.
The series between FIU and Delaware concludes tomorrow morning at Hannah Stadium.
