The University of Delaware baseball team won a close game against Florida International University by a score of 9-8 in the opening contest of their Conference USA weekend series on May 1 at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The victory brings Delaware’s record to 15-31 overall and 3-19 in Conference USA play. The result was notable as the Blue Hens overcame an early five-run deficit, rallying to secure the win.

Sal Mineo led Delaware offensively with three hits, one run batted in, and a stolen base. Evan Bouldin contributed two hits and three runs batted in, while Matthew Minckler also had two hits. On the mound, Andrew Callaway started for Delaware and pitched 2.2 innings, allowing five runs—two earned—and striking out four batters. Nick Bilotto followed with 3.2 innings pitched, giving up one earned run on two hits to earn his first win of the season. Ryan McLaughlin closed out the game with a save after pitching the final 2.2 innings.

FIU took an early lead with a three-run home run in the second inning and extended it with a two-run double in the third for a total lead of six runs to one before Delaware tied it up with a five-run fourth inning that included key contributions from Mineo, Sam Winsett, Bouldin, and Anthony DeCesare. Jeremy Wolf then hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give Delaware an advantage they would not relinquish.

Delaware added another insurance run late before FIU attempted but failed to mount their own comeback effort in the ninth inning.

The teams are scheduled to meet again tomorrow evening at Bob Hannah Stadium. The event will include alumni day celebrations and recognition of former coach Bob Hannah’s legacy.
