The Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has issued a warning to residents about a new SMS phishing scam. The fraudulent messages claim recipients have an outstanding traffic violation and urge them to click on a link to pay the due amount by a specific date, threatening suspension of vehicle registration and driving privileges. These scams aim to extract money and access personal, private, and financial data.
The DMV advises against clicking on any links requesting payment for unpaid traffic violations, toll violations, or account replenishment. The Delaware DMV and E-ZPass Delaware will not contact individuals via email or text for such payments. “Please, no matter who the message is from, don’t click on a link to initiate a payment of any type unless you are confident the message is legit,” said DMV Director Amy Anthony. She further cautioned that scammers exploit panic responses and advised reviewing suspicious messages carefully for red flags.
Suspicious texts or emails can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission or the Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov. Reports should include the originating phone number and website mentioned in the text. Those who have clicked on suspicious links or shared sensitive information should secure their personal data and dispute unfamiliar charges with financial institutions.
For inquiries regarding licenses or registrations, residents can visit myDMV.delaware.gov or contact 302-744-2500. E-ZPass account information is available at ezpassde.com or through their customer service center in Downtown Dover.
