The Delaware Department of Transportation has announced that State Route 16 (SR 16) in Sussex County will undergo temporary nightly closures for bridge construction. The closures will occur between northbound and southbound State Route 1 (SR 1) from October 20 to October 22, each night from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
During this period, eastbound motorists on SR 16 will need to use the new ramp to southbound SR 1. To continue eastbound on SR 16, drivers must perform a U-turn using the SR 1 crossover to head northbound and then turn right onto SR 16. Westbound travelers on SR 16 should turn right onto northbound SR 1 and perform a similar U-turn maneuver using the crossover to head southbound before accessing the new ramp back onto SR 16.
Traffic on both northbound and southbound lanes of SR 1 will be reduced from two lanes to one during these detours. Additionally, the traffic signal at the intersection of northbound SR 1 and SR 16 Broadkill Road will operate in flash mode.
Construction activities include work on pavement, embankment, and bridge structures along northbound SR 1. The current traffic pattern is expected to remain until the completion of the northbound bridge in Winter 2026, with overall project completion anticipated by Spring of that year.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution and anticipate minor delays in the area. Further information can be accessed through DelDOT’s website at www.deldot.gov or by tuning into WTMC-AM at frequency [1380](https://www.wtmc1380.com/).
