The Delaware Forest Service’s Wildland Fire Crew is set to conduct a controlled burn near Clayton in response to a fire involving about 200 hay bales. State Forester Kyle Hoyd explained that the controlled burn is essential to prevent the fire from spreading and could take between 24 to 30 hours. Experts from the Delaware Forest Service warn that without this measure, the hay pile might continue to smolder for weeks.
The incident was discovered on Wednesday morning, and smoke and odors are expected in the vicinity during the operation. The Delaware Department of Agriculture and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) are closely monitoring the situation. DNREC, along with the Clayton Fire Company, is assisting with the controlled burn.
Residents in the area are advised by DNREC to keep windows and doors shut and turn off air conditioning systems that draw in outside air if smoke becomes prevalent, particularly for those with respiratory conditions.
