The University of Delaware softball team defeated New Mexico State, 11-2, on April 25, scoring runs in every inning to even the weekend series. The game ended after six innings due to the run rule.
The win is notable for Delaware’s consistent offense and strong pitching performance. The team hit three home runs and scored multiple runs in three different innings, showing depth throughout the lineup.
Katie Scheivert reached base five times, going 4-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, a double, and two runs scored. Gianna Costaro went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Bridget Chapman added a home run and a double with two RBIs. Ellie Mulligan hit a solo home run as well. Josie Crossman pitched all six innings for Delaware, allowing only one earned run while striking out four batters.
Delaware started strong by scoring three runs in both the first and second innings. In the first inning, Scheivert and Sydney Shaffer reached base before Costaro brought in the first run on a groundout. Maddie Diamond walked and Sorella Gallucci was hit by a pitch to load the bases; Caylin Blazys then singled in two more runs.
The Blue Hens continued their offensive output throughout each frame. Chapman’s inside-the-park home run capped off an impressive sixth inning that secured Delaware’s victory under the eight-run rule.
Scheivert recorded her third four-hit game of the season while Costaro moved into seventh place all-time at Delaware for career home runs with her seventeenth homerun. According to Jen Steele, “Delaware won its eighth game this season via run rule and 53rd under Jen Steele.”
Looking ahead, Delaware will play New Mexico State again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., aiming for another series win.
