The University of Delaware softball team earned its 11th consecutive win on April 21 with a 2-0 shutout against Maryland. The victory marked Delaware’s second win over Maryland this season and improved the team’s overall record to 27-19.
The continued winning streak is notable as it stands as the fifth-longest in program history, underscoring the team’s strong performance in recent weeks. The Blue Hens have also won ten straight games at home, tying for the third-longest home streak in school history.
Allie Nankivell led Delaware offensively with two hits, an RBI, and a stolen base. Maddie Diamond also contributed two hits, while Katie Scheivert and Jamie Chandler each added singles. Chandler’s double in the sixth inning set up a double steal that resulted in Ryleigh Thomas scoring the first run for Delaware. Nankivell then singled to bring Marlayna Capaldi home for a second run.
Claire Woods pitched all seven innings for Delaware, striking out seven batters and allowing only four hits without issuing any walks. Two runners reached base early in the seventh inning against Woods before Scheivert turned a line-drive double play to secure the shutout.
This win was Delaware’s first home victory over Maryland and marked their third win against a Big Ten opponent this season—a program first. Four of Delaware’s six all-time wins over Maryland have been shutouts. Under head coach Jen Steele, who has guided them to a 78-23 record in April games, this marks their seventh shutout of the current season and their 70th under her leadership overall.
Looking ahead, Delaware will return to conference play on Friday with a three-game series against New Mexico State.
