Delaware State University students visited WPVI-TV 6ABC in Philadelphia on Apr. 14 to explore careers in broadcast journalism and experience the workings of a professional newsroom.
The visit was organized by the university’s Office of Career Services along with the Mass Communications Department, giving students a chance to interact with professionals both on-air and behind the scenes. Students participated in panel discussions, toured the station, and engaged with staff members during their time at the facility.
Christian Mills, Career Coach in the Office of Career Services, said, “6ABC truly rolled out the red carpet and created an intentional, impactful experience for our site visit. Students heard from professionals both in front of and behind the camera through engaging panels, connected with team members over lunch, and toured the facility. It was an incredible and valuable experience for our students.” Mills also said that representation made a significant impact: “When asked about what stuck out to them the most, one of the recurring themes was seeing professionals in front of the camera and leading teams behind the camera that looked like them. They left empowered that not only can they see it, they can be it.”
Reianna Bullock, a freshman mass communications major focusing on digital media, described her reaction: “Visiting 6ABC was an eye-opening experience because it gave me my first chance to step inside a real newsroom and see a TV set up close. Watching how much dedication, teamwork, and behind-the-scenes effort goes into producing a story gave me a deeper appreciation for the news industry. It was especially inspiring to see so many Black professionals in that environment, and it made me even more motivated to pursue a career in media.”
Aaminah S. Foye—a Delaware State University alumna who now works as Career Pathways Specialist while pursuing her master’s degree—said: “As an alumna of Delaware State University, it has been incredibly rewarding to return in a different capacity to support and guide students during this experience. Visiting 6ABC gave them a firsthand look at the energy, precision, and collaboration that defines a real newsroom… Moments like this are impactful because it allows our students to see what is possible for themselves.”
