The University of Delaware women’s tennis team ended its season on April 18 with a 4-0 defeat to Liberty University in the Conference USA Championship match. The contest, held in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, saw fourth-seeded Delaware fall to sixth-seeded Liberty. The Fightin’ Blue Hens completed their campaign with a record of 21-5, tying the program record for most wins in a single season.
This outcome concludes a strong year for Delaware’s women’s tennis program. Despite the loss, the team’s achievement of matching its all-time win total marks an important milestone.
Director of Tennis and Head Women’s Tennis Coach Pablo Montana said, “I’m incredibly grateful to every one of our players for the heart, resilience, and belief you showed all season long, and to everyone who supported us along the way; you made this journey meaningful.” Montana added: “While this chapter ends, I’m excited for what’s ahead and truly believe we’re building something special and moving in the right direction. Congratulations to Liberty on a great match as they earned this championship. As for us, this is just the beginning.”
In doubles play during Saturday’s match, Liberty won both completed matches while one was left unfinished. In singles competition, three matches were decided in favor of Liberty before play was halted due to clinching conditions.
Looking forward, Montana indicated optimism about future seasons and expressed confidence that Delaware women’s tennis is progressing positively.
