FARO INSIGHT, a business of AMETEK, Inc., announced on May 1 the release of an updated version of its Zone 3D software. The update introduces new features intended to help public safety professionals improve efficiency, analytical confidence, and produce outputs suitable for court use.
The growing reliance on digital evidence in investigations makes it important to quickly turn complex scene data into clear insights. The latest Zone 3D update aims to make this process easier by combining data capture, analysis, and presentation within one platform.
Zone 3D is used by collision reconstructionists and crime scene investigators worldwide. It allows users to document and analyze incidents using data from laser scanners, drones, and mobile devices. This consolidation helps reduce the need for multiple tools. Glen Simerly, Officer from the Knox County Sheriffs Office said: “If you are not seriously thinking about using laser scanners, then you’re standing still. You are not moving forward.”
The new update improves usability and workflow efficiency in handling complex datasets while making it easier to interpret scenes and organize projects for both internal review and courtroom presentations. The software now better integrates various types of data—including laser scans, photogrammetry, drone images—within a single environment.
Built-in point cloud registration with Zone Expert Plus enables processing and aligning scan data directly inside the program without extra tools. Integrated photogrammetry powered by FotoPoints lets users convert images or videos from drones or cameras into detailed three-dimensional models in the same environment.
Zone2Go functionality allows sharing complete scenes via portable media so stakeholders can review case data without specialized software. FARO INSIGHT’s broader ecosystem includes hardware such as Focus terrestrial laser scanner, Orbis Premium mobile scanner designed for speed and ease-of-use, as well as Blink imaging scanner requiring minimal training.
According to FARO INSIGHT officials in their announcement on Apr. 29: Enhanced usability, stronger integration capabilities with other sources of digital evidence support investigators in efficiently moving from capturing a scene to delivering insights that aid public safety work.
