Delaware Secretary of Agriculture Don Clifton has announced the appointment of Jimmy Kroon as the new Deputy Secretary. Kroon, who began his tenure on January 12, has been with the Delaware Department of Agriculture (DDA) since 2003. He previously led the department’s Planning division for two years.
“Jimmy Kroon brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his position as Deputy Secretary,” said Secretary Clifton. “In my year as Secretary, Jimmy’s contributions, insight and familiarity with all aspects of the Department of Agriculture have been invaluable as we work every day for all Delawareans.”
Kroon’s career at DDA started in the Plant Industries section in 2003, where he conducted pest surveys affecting various crops and forests. By 2011, he was managing the Cooperative Agriculture Pest Survey, collaborating with entities like the U.S. Department of Agriculture and University of Delaware to protect Delaware’s crops and export markets.
In 2015, Kroon moved to the Aglands Preservation Foundation and became its head in 2020. The foundation is recognized nationally for agricultural preservation efforts, having secured over 1,250 farms and 160,000 acres since its inception.
“I am excited to serve Delaware’s farming community in my new role,” said Deputy Secretary Kroon. “During my 22 years with the Department of Agriculture, I have seen many obstacles that face Delaware’s agriculture and forestry industries and the incredible value in supporting its long-term viability.”
Kroon emphasizes continuous improvement in state programs’ efficiency and quality. Early in his career, he received an award from USDA for enhancing data collection processes. He has also participated in significant projects like avian influenza responses and international trade missions.
Kroon holds degrees from the University of Maine at Machias and Penn State University. He lives in Felton with his wife Lori Brown.
