The National League of Cities announced on April 18 the launch of its AI & Emerging Technology Forum, an initiative aimed at helping local governments understand and responsibly implement artificial intelligence tools in their communities.

The new forum is intended to bring together mayors, chief information officers, technology practitioners, and innovators from cities, towns, and villages. The goal is to explore how emerging technologies like AI can improve service delivery, strengthen governance, and build internal capacity within local government structures.

According to the National League of Cities (NLC), the forum will provide practical resources, tools, and guidance for local leaders as they navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence. Discussions will focus on real-world applications as well as responsible use cases that could benefit communities.

The first meeting of the AI & Emerging Technology Forum took place virtually in March. The group plans to reconvene at the 2026 City Summit in Nashville, Tennessee. This ongoing collaboration aims to promote knowledge-sharing among participating municipalities.

NLC said this initiative expands its support for local governments adapting to digital change. The organization represents more than 200 million people across America’s cities, towns, and villages.
