Rep. Gabe Evans is facing criticism over his record on gun policy as the National Rifle Association (NRA) holds its annual meeting in Houston this week, according to an April 18 statement from GIFFORDS Executive Director Emma Brown.
The issue of gun safety remains a point of debate in Colorado, with advocates raising concerns about elected officials’ ties to the gun lobby and their impact on public safety.
Evans has received an “A” rating from the NRA and support from the organization during his campaigns. According to GIFFORDS, he has voted against waiting periods and safe storage laws, supported arming teachers as a response to school shootings, and sponsored legislation allowing concealed carry on school grounds while serving in the Colorado General Assembly.
“Coloradans want leaders who put their kids’ safety first, not the profits of their political allies in the gun industry,” said Emma Brown. “From voting against waiting periods and safe storage laws, to advocating for arming teachers to address school shootings, to sponsoring a bill to allow concealed carry on school grounds in the Colorado General Assembly, Gabe Evans doesn’t just oppose commonsense gun safety policies — he’s actively pushing a deadly agenda that makes it harder and more dangerous for law enforcement officers to do their jobs. As a former cop, you would think he’d know better.”
Brown also said: “As the NRA gathers in Texas for its annual meeting, voters in Colorado are fed up with partisans like Gabe Evans. Enough is enough — and it’s time to make a change at the ballot box this November.”
GIFFORDS indicated that its experts are available for comment regarding issues related to gun violence prevention.
