State Rep. Jeff Spiegelman, R-Townsend, helped the town of Hartly honor members of the community who served in the armed forces and mark its first flag-raising ceremony with its new town flagpole in a Nov. 10 ceremony.

The flagpole was installed a few weeks ago thanks to financial support from the Hartly Ruritan Club. A lifetime member of the local Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter, Kenneth Bodine, donated the POW/MIA flag that flies near the Old Glory.

State Sen. Dave Lawson, R-Marydel, a Vietnam veteran, also attended the event. He described his experiences and the importance of remembering the sacrifice that comes with military service.

“I saw the anguish that the families suffered simply because we were over there. I want to thank the families for that,” Lawson said during the ceremony.

The town is the smallest in Delaware, with 74 registered residents.

Speigelman thanked the town for inviting him to the ceremony on his Facebook page, saying it was a “fantastic way to honor our nation and those who have served it.”
