The Delaware Department of Agriculture has announced the semi-finalists for the 2024 Delaware Environmental Stewardship Awards. This marks the first time grain farmers have been recognized as semi-finalists in this category. The announcement was made by Brooke Walls, Nutrient Management Program Administrator, during a meeting of the Delaware Nutrient Management Commission on March 4, 2025.

For over 15 years, the Delaware Nutrient Management Commission has collaborated with poultry integrators to sponsor these awards. In 2024, the award categories were expanded to include all constituents covered by the Nutrient Management Law. "Delaware farmers care deeply about positively impacting the environment," said Brooke Walls. "The Environmental Stewardship Award is an opportunity to celebrate Delaware farmers of all operation types who go the extra mile to protect our soil and water quality."

The award categories now include poultry, grain crops, vegetable crops, livestock operations, equine operations, and golf course or commercial turf operations. The selection criteria focus on best management practices and excellence in water quality stewardship.

The four semi-finalists selected for site visits are Thomas Family Farms of Marydel, Bishop Farms of Sandtown, Dave Marvel Farms of Harrington, and Twin Cedar Ag of Greenwood. Each received a lane sign, plaque, and monetary gift.

Bishop Farms was named the winner for its diversified grain operation managed by Dale Bishop and his daughters Megan Bishop and Logan Field. They have reported sustainable practices that help market their grain while maintaining high levels of cover crops and conservation tillage.

Thomas Family Farms is noted for blending tradition with innovation across its 3,700 acres. David Marvel operates a multigenerational farm in Harrington with significant involvement in agricultural organizations. Chris and Karen Breeding at Twin Cedar Ag focus on subsurface drainage systems for improved water quality.
