Nine organizations in Delaware have been awarded a total of $173,000 by the Tree for Every Delawarean Initiative (TEDI) to plant 12,055 trees in spring 2026. TEDI collaborates with partners such as the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) and the Delaware Forest Service under the Delaware Department of Agriculture. The initiative aims to plant one million trees by 2030, with over 350,000 already planted across the state.
DNREC Secretary Greg Patterson highlighted the environmental benefits of trees, stating they help combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and providing shade in urban areas to reduce energy costs. The recipients of this funding include organizations like Delaware Nature Society and University of Delaware.
Robert “Blake” Moore from the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension mentioned that their Kranz Farm food forest tree project will benefit wildlife and improve water quality while contributing to climate carbon sequestration.
In addition to these projects, TEDI will host nine tree giveaways this fall, distributing 2,250 trees across all three counties in Delaware. Event details are available on the de.gov/tedi webpage and DNREC’s Calendar of Events. More information about funding opportunities and native tree nurseries can also be found on their website.
