The U.S. Census Bureau announced on April 28 that it will provide accredited media with restricted access to the 2025 edition of population estimates for local government units, including incorporated places, minor civil divisions, and consolidated cities. The access period will begin at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday, May 12 and end at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, May 14.

This temporary access allows members of the press to review key demographic data before its public release. Media subscribers with restricted access can also interview Census Bureau experts during this window by sending an email request to pio@census.gov.

To participate, accredited media must visit the Census Bureau’s restricted-access website and register for entry. The information available under this arrangement includes population estimates as well as housing unit estimates for states, counties, and the nation.

The Census Bureau emphasized that any information obtained through restricted access cannot be disclosed or shared publicly until the official publication date at 12:01 a.m., Eastern Time on Thursday, May 14. This includes sharing via internet publication or distribution through cable or other services.

Subscribers are advised to confirm their username and password are up-to-date before May 12 in order to avoid issues accessing the site. For assistance related to restricted access, inquiries can be sent via email to pio@census.gov.
