The Uganda U-20 Women’s National Team, known as the Queen Cranes, will play against Ghana on May 3 at the Accra Sports Stadium in the first leg of the final round of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup African Qualifiers.
This match is important for Uganda as they aim to qualify for their first ever FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. A positive result away from home would strengthen their chances ahead of the return leg.
The Queen Cranes completed their final preparations in Accra after arriving on Friday morning. The technical team has focused on both tactical and physical aspects before this key encounter. After the last training session at Accra Sports Stadium, head coach Sheryl Ulanda Botes said, “We have had the feel of the actual stadium and the morale is positive. We have covered every detail to help us get a good result. We want to do this for every girl child in Uganda and for the people of Uganda.”
Botes also said, “We know it is going to be difficult against Ghana. These are the kind of games you need to play and show character.”
Team captain Agnes Nabukenya spoke about how well prepared her teammates are: “We have acclimatised to the weather and environment here in Ghana. The team is in good shape and we are fully focused on delivering a strong performance.”
The two-legged tie will decide one of Africa’s four representatives at next year’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, with Uganda hosting Ghana for the return leg on May 9 at FUFA Stadium.
