A Wilmington man was sentenced on Mar. 10 to 37 months in federal prison for possessing ammunition as a convicted felon, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware. U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika handed down the sentence.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address gun-related offenses involving individuals with prior felony convictions.

Court documents show that on June 15, 2024, officers from the Wilmington Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle due to suspected illegal window tinting. The driver, identified as Andre McDougal, age 45, fled from police and crashed his car into a commercial fence before reversing and crashing again into a residential building. After a brief foot chase, police arrested McDougal and later found approximately 50 rounds of ammunition in his vehicle during a lawful search. Due to multiple previous felony convictions, McDougal was prohibited from possessing ammunition.

U.S. Attorney Benjamin L. Wallace of the District of Delaware and Special Agent in Charge Charles Doerrer of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Baltimore office announced the sentencing. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Jacob Laksin prosecuted it.
