U.S. Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons (both D-Del.) spoke in Wilmington at the investiture ceremony of Judge Tamika Montgomery-Reeves who will serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. President Joe Biden nominated Montgomery-Reeves in June, and she was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 12, 2022. Both Sens. Carper and Coons recommended her nomination to the President and voted to confirm Montgomery-Reeves.

“I was thrilled to join Senator Coons to recommend a trailblazer and excellent jurist with the heart of a public servant – Justice Tamika Montgomery-Reeves – to our President to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit,” said Senator Carper. “This we celebrate Judge Montgomery-Reeves on her appointment, which is well-deserved after serving two of Delaware’s highly-regarded courts — the Delaware Court of Chancery and the Delaware Supreme Court.”

“After serving on state courts for seven years, Delaware and America are lucky to have Judge Tamika Montgomery-Reeves on the federal bench, and it’s a pleasure to celebrate her integrity, intellect, and work ethic that will benefit the judiciary for many years,” said Senator Coons. “The Third Circuit is already benefitting from her judicial temperament and experience, and Delaware looks forward to her continued service.”

“Judge Tamika Montgomery-Reeves is a trailblazer in every sense of the word. I am so proud to witness this historic milestone for her career and our state,” said Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester. “It is because of her conscience, character, and courage that she has been entrusted to do this important work, and I am certain that she will utilize her skills and talents to be an even-handed jurist in upholding the rule of law.”

Judge Tamika Montgomery-Reeves previously served as a justice on the Delaware Supreme Court, where she was the first African-American woman to sit on the bench. Prior to that, Judge Montgomery-Reeves served as Vice Chancellor of the Delaware Court of Chancery from November 2015 to November 2019. Before her public service, she was a partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati in Wilmington, Delaware.

Judge Montgomery-Reeves graduated from the McDonnell-Barksdale Honors College at the University of Mississippi in 2003. She received her law degree in 2006 from the University of Georgia School of Law. Judge Montgomery-Reeves served as a law clerk for Chancellor William B. Chandler III of the Delaware Court of Chancery.
